Glencoe

Located within Lochaber Geopark in the Highlands, the deep valley and towering mountains of Glen Coe were formed over millenniums of shifting glaciers and volcanic eruptions. Glencoe village is located between the banks of Loch Leven and the mouth of the famous glen. It’s the perfect base for exploring the Lochaber area, known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK.

Morvern Games & Gala, 18 – 25 July 2026 – Less than an hour from Glencoe, the Morvern Games combine traditional Highland events, pipe bands and family-friendly activities in a festive week-long celebration.

Clachaig Inn Live Music Weekends, dates vary throughout 2026 – One of Scotland’s best-known mountain inns hosts regular weekends of live folk, blues and traditional music, attracting visitors from across the Highlands and beyond.

Glencoe Marathon, 6 September 2026 – Take on one of Scotland’s most scenic trail running events, with marathon and half marathon routes travelling through dramatic Highland landscapes from Fort William and Kinlochleven to Glencoe Mountain Resort.

Fort William Mountain Festival, 11 – 14 February 2027 – Discover inspiring adventure films, guest speakers, workshops and outdoor activities celebrating mountain culture and exploration in the Outdoor Capital of the UK.

Scottish Six Day Trial, 3 – 8 May 2027 – Fort William welcomes competitors and spectators from around the world for this iconic motorcycle trial event, taking riders across rugged Highland terrain and scenic off-road routes.

How to travel to and around Glencoe

Getting to

Bus and coach

Catch the CityLink bus from various points in Glasgow and in a little over two hours you will enter the Pass of Glencoe. There are several stops along the length of the route. 

A CityLink service runs from Uig in the north of Skye and travels south to Glasgow, the bus stops at various points along the way. A local bus service runs from Inverness to Fort William. Change buses to reach the Glencoe area.  

Train

Catch the train from Glasgow Queen Street and enjoy the scenic ride up to Fort William. You can disembark at Crianlarich or Bridge of Orchy, both of which are within easy reach of Glencoe by car.  From the north, a local train service runs from Mallaig to Fort William or, during the peak season, you can hop aboard The Jacobite steam train. 

Driving

The route to Glencoe is one of the most spectacular in Scotland. The main road north runs through the famous glen itself. If travelling south through Fort William, the drive will take you past Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK.

The drive from Glasgow to Glencoe takes just over two hours while Fort William is only half an hour away.

There are several airports within easy reach of Glencoe including Glasgow Prestwick, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, and Aberdeen, all of which offer connections to and from Europe and other overseas destinations.

Getting around

Walking

Many visitors arrive in Glencoe while walking the famous long-distance footpath – the West Highland Way, which will take you over Rannoch Moor, and drop you down directly into Kinlochleven then continue into Fort William.

Cycling

Exploring on two wheels is easy with plenty of on and off-road cycle routes around the area. The landscape offers challenging terrain and cycle paths for every level and type of bike. Various types of bikes are suitable for exploring the roads or local trails. You can also hire bikes from a number of bike hire businesses within the area. 

Bus and coach

There is a weekend bus service (no 44) operated by Shiel Buses which runs between Kinlochleven and Fort William, stopping in Glencoe, Ballachulish and villages and hamlets. The bus also goes to Duror and Kentallen.

West Coast Motors also runs a service which runs between Oban and Fort William and stops at many places around Glencoe. 

A new Scottish Government / Transport Scotland 12-month initiative to make bus travel more affordable for both visitors and locals is now available. It applies to short and long-distance routes and all main bus operators (Stagecoach, Ember, CityLink), meaning single bus fares are capped at £2 across the Highlands and Islands. The scheme runs until early 2027.

Driving

Parking is widely available throughout the area and there are two filling stations available, one in North Ballachulish and another in Glencoe village. If driving an electric vehicle (EV) you can check out where the nearest charging station is available using the live map facility on chargeplacescotland.org.
