Scottish whisky

Breathe in the oak, savour rich flavours, and discover the spirit of Scotland in every dram.

What is Scottish whisky?

Whisky is Scotland's national drink and our biggest export, enjoyed across the globe as well as right here in Scotland. Distilled from pure water and golden barley, it rests in oak barrels tucked away among mountains and heather-covered glens. As the seasons pass, the spirit slowly matures, absorbing the essence of Scotland before finding its way into every glass.

From the Highlands to our islands and into the furthest reaches of the south of Scotland, you can experience Scottish whisky wherever your journey takes you. Enjoy a wee dram with a meal in one of our pubs and restaurants or embark on a distillery tour to witness how a humble grain of barley is turned into the rich golden spirit renowned around the world. See the sunlight gleaming in the beautiful copper stills that imbue the liquid with its special character – so precious that it is said new stills are produced with the same little dents their predecessors had to make sure the aroma of the whisky doesn’t change!

Did you know? You can find some whisky flavoured ice cream across the country! Head over to the Scotch Corner in Pitlochry to try their fantastic Edradour Ice Cream, made with whisky from the local distillery!

Everything you need to know about Scottish whisky

What is single malt whisky?

Single malt whisky means that the product comes from a single distillery, made exclusively from malted barley, distilled using pot stills, and is aged for at least 3 years in oak casks no bigger than 700 litres.

What is single grain whisky?

Single grain whisky is defined as coming from a single distillery and can be made from any cereal grain including small amounts of barley.

Why is Scotch whisky unique to Scotland?

Whisky has been a unique Scottish product for centuries, with production dating back to the late 1400s and its origins being linked to Scottish monks and farmers.

How is whisky produced?

Whisky is made through five main stages – malting, mashing, fermenting, distilling, and maturing. The spirit is then aged in barrels where it develops its distinctive characteristic flavour, colour, and aroma.

What is whisky made from?

Whisky is made from fermented grain mash – usually from grains such as barley, corn, rye, or wheat - as well as water and yeast.

How long does whisky take to mature?

To be classified as Scotch whisky, the spirit must mature in oak casks in Scotland for a minimum of three years. Many whiskies are aged for much longer to develop additional depth and character.

What's the difference between whisky and whiskey?

Generally, "whisky" is the spelling used in Scotland, while "whiskey" is more commonly used in Ireland and the United States.
