What to expect in Oban

Often referred to as the “Gateway to the Isles”, Oban is the ideal base to explore further afield. This distinctive harbour town offers plenty of places to discover. Explore historic landmarks, take a boat tour to spot local marine wildlife, catch a ferry to the Inner Hebrides, stroll along the shore on a coastal walk or sample freshly caught seafood at one of the seafront stalls. When is the best time to visit Oban?

May to September is a great time to visit Oban, with longer days to explore the bustling harbour, enjoy fresh seafood and take boat trips to the nearby islands, though you can enjoy Oban all year round.  

Spring (March–May): Climb McCaig’s Tower on Battery Hill for panoramic views across Oban and the surrounding islands.  

Summer (June–August): Take a ferry to the Isle of Kerrera, where you can enjoy coastal walks, spot wildlife and take in sweeping views back towards Oban Bay. 

Autumn (September–November): Discover Oban's food and drink, from handmade chocolate at the Oban Chocolate Company to whisky tastings at the Oban Distillery.  

Winter (December–February): Experience the festive atmosphere of Oban during the annual Oban Winter Festival, with seasonal events and local markets. 

How long should I stay in Oban?
