Wild camping in Scotland FAQs

Is it legal to camp anywhere in Scotland?

Almost. Wild camping is legal on most unenclosed land under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, as long as you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Some areas, like parts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, require permits.

Can you wild camp with a caravan in Scotland?

No. Wild camping rights apply to lightweight tents, not caravans or motorhomes, where you should use official campsites or designated overnight spots.

Do I need a licence or permit to caravan or camp in Scotland?

Usually no. But some controlled zones (eg, parts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs) require a camping permit during peak months. Caravans should stick to official sites and follow local parking regulations.

When is the best time of year for caravan and camping holidays in Scotland?

Spring to autumn offers the best mix of daylight, mild weather and open sites, though many parks operate year‑round. Some areas introduce seasonal permit rules in busy months.

Respect, protect, enjoy

Help keep Scotland’s landscapes beautiful for everyone:

  • Always use official campsites or designated overnight spots
  • Book ahead and have a Plan B for busy periods
  • Take all rubbish home and clean up after pets
  • Respect wildlife, plants, and cultural heritage
  • Follow local parking rules
  • Stick to fire guidance and use only permitted fire areas
  • Keep clear of land management work on farms and estates

For a safe, respectful trip, check the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
