Are you a camper or a glamper?

Or somewhere in-between? Before you plan and book your Scottish camping holiday, discover what kind of outdoor escape matches you best.

You are a camper

If your dream break means evenings under the stars, misty mornings, and the gentle crackle of a campfire. You love being close to nature and getting back to basics.

You are a glamper

You adore the great outdoors… as long as you can sink into a comfy bed at the end of a long adventurous day, with some home comforts to make your stay that little bit more relaxing. Scotland’s cosy cabins, quirky pods, and woodland hideaways call your name.

You are a campervan fan

If you love a multi‑stop adventure that includes glistening coastal roads, rolling glens and lochside lunches. Compact living is where it’s at, and every day brings a fresh and inspiring view.

You are a caravanner

If you like to take a little bit of home wherever you go – a proper mattress, kitchen essentials, and the joy of settling in for a few relaxing nights – exploring Scotland in a caravan may be for you.

  • Family‑friendly extras such as play areas, cafés, shops, Wi-Fi, and swimming pools
  • Hundreds of official sites that help keep Scotland’s wild places protected
  • EV options with on‑site charging points

If you don't have a caravan, you can hire one from many locations across Scotland — remember to book early to avoid disappointment, especially in peak season.

Camping in Scotland FAQs

Is it legal to camp anywhere in Scotland?

Almost. Wild camping is legal on most unenclosed land under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, as long as you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Some areas, like parts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, require permits.

Can you wild camp with a caravan in Scotland?

No. Wild camping rights apply to lightweight tents, not caravans or motorhomes, where you should use official campsites or designated overnight spots.

Do I need a licence or permit to caravan or camp in Scotland?

Usually no. But some controlled zones (e.g. parts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs) require a camping permit during peak months. Caravans should stick to official sites and follow local parking regulations.

When is the best time of year for caravan and camping holidays in Scotland?

Spring to autumn offers the best mix of daylight, mild weather, and open sites, though many parks operate year‑round. Some areas introduce seasonal permit rules in busy months.
