Lying between Harris and Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, North Uist is a paradise for wildlife and beach lovers.

The island is characterised by its 'drowned landscape' of peat bogs and lochans, and its string of beautiful beaches.

Arrive by ferry in Lochmaddy, once a major herring fishing port, and visit the wonderful Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre, which celebrates the arts, culture and heritage of the islands.

Marvel at miles of unspoilt sandy beaches on Traigh Hornais Clachan Sands or Hosta beach. Or experience the relaxing sounds of the sea and wildlife at the RSPB Nature Reserve at Balranald where the machair draws in lapwings, oystercatchers and corncrakes. If you are feeling more energetic, you can climb the scenic hill of Eaval for spectacular 360 degree views.

Further south on Grimsay, you can visit the Harbour Museum, the only maritime heritage centre in the Western Isles and learn how traditional wool yarns are created at the nearby Uist Wool Mill & Wool Centre

To finish your day in high spirit, enjoy a warm island welcome and a glass of the multi award winning Downpour gin at the North Uist Distillery visitor centre at Nunton.
