South Uist

Uist is also renowned for its dark skies, offering great stargazing opportunities, and the chance to see the Northern Lights. 

On the west coast, you will find some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere - a long line of white powder sands backed by dunes and flower-filled machair. 

The east side of South Uist is mountainous, and you can tackle the heights of the spectacular Beinn Mhor, the highest point at 2034ft. Take an authentic island tour with Long Island Retreats and meet some adorable Shetland ponies along Loch Skipport nearby. 

On the island, you will also find the oldest golf course in the Outer Hebrides at Askernish Golf Club , an Old Tom Morris Course and one of the most unique golf experiences in the world. 

Don't miss a visit to the island's main settlement, and port, Lochboisdale on the east coast. It is the main gateway to South Uist. 

South Uist is at the heartland of Gaelic culture and crofting culture. There is a rich musical tradition celebrated in the many informal ceilidhs. Don’t miss the Ceolas Festival in July with cèilidhs, concerts, walks and more. It’s a great opportunity to meet the friendly islanders, experience their great hospitality and perhaps share a song or a dance, or a wee dram.
